Starting daycare is a big step—for both you and your dog. Just like kids on their first day of school, pups can feel a mix of excitement and nerves when they try something new. At Lil Doggie Den, we specialize in helping little dogs under 25 pounds feel safe, confident, and right at home, but there are also a few things you can do to set your pup up for success.
Start Slow (and Keep it Positive)
Your dog doesn’t need to jump into full days right away. Sometimes, shorter visits at first can help them ease into the new routine. Think of it like a playdate—short, sweet, and fun. Each positive experience builds their confidence for next time. This is why we offer our half day evaluation at a reduced rate.
Pack Comfort From Home
Even though we have plenty of cozy spots, toys, and friends here, some pups feel more secure if they have something familiar. A small blanket, favorite toy, or even an item with your scent can make their first few visits extra comforting. If you pup gets overwhelmed in our zoom room, we can give them a time-out in their own space, with their own treasure.
Practice “Goodbyes”
Dogs pick up on our emotions. If drop-off feels heavy or rushed, they’ll notice. Try keeping goodbyes light and upbeat—almost like you’re saying, “See you later!” rather than “I hate leaving you!” That helps your pup feel that this is a safe, normal part of their day.
Keep a Routine
Consistency makes a world of difference. Coming on the same days each week helps your pup know what to expect and makes the transition smoother. Dogs love patterns—it helps them feel secure.
Trust the Process
It’s completely normal if your pup takes a few visits to fully settle in. Some walk in ready to make ten new friends right away, while others need a little more time to warm up. Our team is trained to guide those shy pups at their own pace, encouraging positive experiences every step of the way.
Why Daycare is Worth It
Once your pup adjusts, daycare offers so many benefits:
Burned-off energy (hello, calmer evenings at home!)
Safe socialization with other little dogs
Mental stimulation that keeps boredom (and mischief) away
Extra love and care from people who truly get small dogs
At Lil Doggie Den, we’re not just a daycare—we’re your partner in giving your dog a happier, healthier life. The adjustment period is just the first step to years of tail wags, friendships, and fun.
So take a deep breath, give your pup a little encouragement, and know that we’ll be here to make every visit feel like home.
